The idea for this bag came from COCO Chanel in the 1920s, but it was not implemented until 1955. The classic design of the rectangular basic shape and the small half-moon-shaped pocket on the back - also known as 'Mona Lisa's smile' - existed then as it does today. The diamond pattern with quilted seams and the chain elements have developed over the years into an irrevocable identifying feature of Chanel and immediately appear elegant and luxurious to the wearer.
